About us

The Trustworthy Autonomous Systems (TAS) group conducts cutting-edge research on artificial intelligence systems that are safe, explainable, and aligned with human values. We aim to bridge the gap between AI capabilities and societal trust through rigorous research and real-world applications.

We develop AI methods that are:

  • Safe – Systems that operate reliably without causing harm
  • Explainable – Decisions that humans can understand
  • Robust – Performance that remains stable under uncertainty
  • Ethical – Aligned with human values and societal norms

Vision

We envision a future where autonomous systems—from wheelchairs to railways—operate safely alongside humans, with decisions that can be understood, verified, and trusted.

Who We Are

TAS is a research group at IDSIA (Istituto Dalle Molle di Studi sull’Intelligenza Artificiale), a joint research institute of USI (Università della Svizzera italiana) and SUPSI (Scuola universitaria professionale della Svizzera italiana).

The group is led by Prof. Francesco Flammini and brings together researchers with expertise in machine learning, formal methods, robotics, ethics, and safety engineering.

Achievements

  • 🏆 Dalle Molle Award 2024 – 1st Prize for “Trustworthy AI for Autonomous Wheelchairs”
  • 🌟 Stanford Top 2% Scientists – Prof. Flammini recognized in world ranking
  • 🎖️ TRA VISIONS 2024 – Senior Researcher Competition Award (Railways)
  • 🏅 NATO Best Paper Award – Explainability in Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning
