We are proud to announce that Ardian Selmonaj and Alessandro Antonucci, senior researcher of TAS group at IDSIA USI-SUPSI, have been acknowledged with the Best Paper Award at the NATO Symposium on Digital Transformation. Their paper, titled ‘Explainability in Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning for Air Combat Tactics’, was developed in collaboration with a team from the Science and Technology Competence Centre (S+T) of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS).

This project is a result from a long-standing collaboration between the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence at SUPSI and the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection, and Sport (DDPS), focused on advancing ethical, transparent, and trustworthy AI-driven defence technologies.
The Best Paper Award was presented at the annual symposium Modelling and Simulation as an Enabler for Digital Transformation in NATO and Nations, organised by Science and Technology Organisation (STO) NATO’s science and technology body. This recognition highlights the critical role of ‘explainability’ in Artificial Intelligence as a paramount aspect for the future development of defence and security technologies.
