On Wednesday 5 June, we will host Francesco Sovrano from the University of Zurich, who will give a talk entitled: Explaining the Unexplainable: Bridging the Gap between Generative AI and Theory-Driven Explanations.
Please find below abstract and short biography.
Abstract:
This presentation will revolve around the issues and challenges posed by generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), focusing on how tools like ChatGPT produce explanations in educational settings. We will explore the issues related to how GenAI generates explanations, and discuss the importance of addressing these challenges. The objective is to lay the groundwork for future research collaborations that will deepen our understanding of the most effective quantitative and qualitative methods for dissecting GenAI’s explanation processes. By doing so, we aim to contribute to the development of transparent, next-generation explanatory AI systems, aligning with UNESCO’s vision for AI as a trustworthy tool. This effort will help open the black box of GenAI, making its workings more accessible and comprehensible.
Short Bio:
Francesco Sovrano is Senior Researcher at the University of Zurich (UZH). His research focuses on Data Science, and it is highly interdisciplinary, lying at the intersection of XAI (Explainable AI), RL (Reinforcement Learning), Law , NLP (Natural Language Processing) and HCI (Human-Computer Interaction). He is specialised in theory of explanations and its applications in artificial intelligence for improving learning and the acquisition of information.
